Robert Dean is 40 and has never had to work very hard.
He says that his father didn't do very much either
- except a little traveling. It was his grandfather
who made a fortune by investing in a gasoline company. He
lives a luxurious bachelor life and has never dreamed of marrying. He
lives in a small house in a fashionable part of central London. Mr
Dean usually gets up at about 9.30 and reads "The Times" and "The
Sporting Life" (a horse racing newspaper), then he has a bath and gets dressed. After
that he either has a long lunch at his club or goes to the races. Then
he comes back home and has a rest before going out to a dinner party or a film
- "Nothing too intellectual," he says. In
May he usually goes to the South of France, but comes back for Ascot (a famous
horse race) and Wimbledon. In July he goes to the
races and Open Golf Championship, then after August 12th he shoots grouse every
day for a few weeks. He likes to spend the winter
travelling in Asia or South America. "I used
to like South Africa," he says, "but it isn't so good now. I don't think
most men or women should have the vote. Women shouldn't have responsible jobs
- They should stay at home and look after the children." When
I asked him if he thought that life should have a purpose, he said "no,"
without hesitation. |
