Doctors are very open and honest with their patients and expect straightforward answers. Patients are told exactly what is wrong with them and what their chances of being cured are. This is different in Japan where patients who are terminally ill are often not told about their illness to save them from unnecessary stress and worry. The higher fees also create a lot of competition between hospitals and doctors. In order to attract patients, American hospitals are very modern, clean and cheerful places. Also, it is believed that the environment plays an important role in helping to cure the patient. In general, Americans spend much less time in hospitals than Japanese people.
131	（英会話リスニングスクリプト） Shortly after a huge transport plane unloaded its cargo at a military airbase in Hawaii, one of the workers saw a metre-long, brown-coloured snake crawl into a canal and disappear. This would not have been unusual, but there are no snakes in Hawaii and the plane was from Guam. The combination of these two circumstances resulted in wildlife officers with dogs spending days desperately trying to find the snake - unfortunately without success. Brown tree snakes are poisonous predators which grow up to nearly three metres and were accidentally introduced to Guam about 50 years ago. They quickly spread through the island, destroying the bird population, and making large parts of this once snake-free island much less attractive to tourists. A nocturnal predator, the brown tree snake is particularly good at climbing up trees and stealing eggs and baby birds from their nests. They have been known to eat small pets such as cats and have been found curled around babies sleeping in their beds.
