My friend Keiko met a man through a personal advertisement
in the newspaper. His name was Keisuke and she liked
him very much. He came from Kanazawa and was buying
an apartment there. However, he said that there was
a problem with the roof and the builders wanted \500,000 to repair it. She
lent him the money and he went back to Kanazawa to see the builders. He
said he would phone during the week, but he didn't. Keiko
waited and waited but nothing happened. She phoned
his number, but she just got an answering machine, then, after a week or so, his
phone was disconnected. In the end she told her parents
what had happened. Her father had a friend in the
police. He spoke to the policeman and asked him for
his advice. The policeman said that it might be impossible
to find the man and anyway, it was Keiko's decision to lend him the money. He
advised Keiko to forget about the man and the money and to be more careful in
